What are Five childhood wounds?

The five childhood wounds, as described by psychologists and therapists, refer to common emotional wounds or unmet needs that can occur during childhood and have a lasting impact on an individual's emotional well-being and relationships in adulthood.

  • Abandonment: This wound stems from experiences of neglect, abandonment, or emotional detachment from primary caregivers during childhood. It can lead to a deep fear of being abandoned or rejected in adulthood, and difficulty trusting or forming secure attachments.

  • Rejection: Rejection wounds stem from experiences where a child feels unaccepted, unwanted, or invalidated. Adults who carry rejection wounds may exhibit behaviors such as seeking excessive approval from others, avoiding intimate relationships for fear of rejection, or developing a defensive attitude to protect themselves from perceived criticism or abandonment.
